Periodontal Treatment

This is the branch of dentistry that treats gum issues. The tooth is attached to the jaw bone through the gums and periodontal ligament. Bugs or bacteria in the mouth can get down this space and cause damage to the surrounding bone. If this is left for a long time it can lead to teeth becoming wiggly or sometimes infected.

The aim of periodontal treatment is to clean the space between the tooth and bones. A dentist or hygienist is able to do this for you, as well as work closely with you to make sure you are able to brush and floss well at home.

Sometimes if the gum problems are severe, you may need to be referred to a gum specialist (a periodontist).
